De l'instinct vers la réussite : L'aventure de 3 Femmes et 1 Coussin

From Instinct to Success: The Adventure of 3 Women and 1 Cushion

Last September, we were invited to the 200th anniversary of Maison Vista Alegre, which we represent in Canada. At the time, we thought, "Okay, we just won the dishwashing Olympics!"

The company didn't start with the idea of making dishes, Annick tells us. Originally, I had just moved in and was looking for beautiful pieces for my home. I really liked The Art of European Living , and the offerings were limited on the Quebec market...

I had no experience in entrepreneurship or import-export. Then I met Sandrine, an artist who painted, among other things, on tableware. While attending one of her exhibitions, I had an idea: to offer a "basement to attic" offering. I had an ambitious vision and asked Sandrine if she wanted to embark on the adventure to create tableware. We then welcomed a third partner, with a background in entrepreneurship. Hence our name, 3 Women and 1 Cushion.

The trigger to start a business

Sandrine: Honestly, we didn't know exactly what we were doing. When Annick proposed the idea to us, we gave ourselves two weeks to see if we were on the same wavelength. We liked the idea, so we went for it. Annick had a clear vision and she challenged us on it.

Annick: At first, it was more of a project than a business, as we all had other jobs. But after a great media spotlight, we had to embrace this success and meet the demand. That's when we decided to devote ourselves 100% to the art of the table, particularly because our entourage was very active in the restaurant industry.

We didn't know we would win entrepreneurship awards or build a successful business . One day, I flew to a food service trade show in Chicago and met with an export manager (from a French porcelain factory) and off we went!

We entered the market at the same time as the new celebrity chef movement was emerging, and this synchronicity helped us establish ourselves. Little by little, we realized that we had become entrepreneurs.

Friendship at the heart of the company

Annick: We were colleagues in the restaurant industry before becoming partners at 3F1C. Trust developed naturally, guided by our instincts, which have been with us for 25 years.

Sandrine: We are very different, but that is our strength: our friendship is nourished by our complementarity.

The challenges encountered

As with all entrepreneurs, the first big challenge was cash flow management.

Starting a business is like having a child: if you really knew everything it entails, few people would do it! It requires constant questioning and total commitment. But an inner strength pushes us forward.

Annick and Sandrine: We've never felt in danger with each other. Communication is essential. We constantly discuss our respective responsibilities and the future of the company.

Advice for future entrepreneurs

Sandrine: Good luck! (laughs) Seriously, you never know how an idea will evolve. You have to listen, seek advice, but also know how to follow your intuition. Overanalyzing means you risk never getting started. Sometimes you have to close your eyes and go for it.

Annick: We've overcome countless challenges by rolling up our sleeves and never giving up. Entrepreneurship is a true gift of self; it's not easy.

The importance of the environment

Annick and Sandrine: 25 years ago, if someone had said to us, "Your idea is nice, but well...", it wouldn't have stopped us. We were naive, and paradoxically, that's what allowed us to get started!

We learned our craft by practicing it. The art of the table is a universe in itself.

Today, we've built a solid reputation, says Annick. We often hear, "Call the girls, they'll take care of everything." It's a source of immense pride. Our work ethic is the key to our growth. Our customers don't just buy products, but also our expertise and know-how.

Future and vision

Where will 3 Women and 1 Cushion be in five years?

Five years is the beginning of a new chapter. What will happen next? We don't know, and that's a good thing! As long as there's fun and energy, we'll keep going.

Annick: It's always at the last minute that we feel the great inspiration! (laughs)
